The Mummer's Folly

Mature

Your lies are the only map, and the wasteland is closing in.

As a spy disguised as a royal mapmaker, you've infiltrated a treacherous court about to march into a deadly wasteland. But your cover is unraveling—your fake landmarks are drawn from memory, and one slip could reveal your true identity. Now the expedition is your only chance to steal the real treasure map, but the king's shadowy advisor suspects far more than you know. Will you trust your forged credentials or risk everything on the shifting sands of betrayal?

The story begins

The cold of the archive seeped through your wool coat as your fingers traced the hand-drawn coastline, checking your work against the memory of a map you’d never actually seen. The ink was still wet on the final chart—a beautiful lie, every contour and river bend a fabrication you’d spent three weeks perfecting.

“The river bends east here,” said a voice behind you, soft and precise as a scalpel.

You didn’t flinch. You’d learned not to. Kaelith stood in the doorway, her dark cloak catching the lamplight, her eyes moving from the map to your face and back.

“The surveys disagree,” you said, your voice carrying the faint boredom of a man who had corrected courtiers a thousand times.

“The surveys lie.” She stepped closer, close enough that you could smell the cold stone on her clothes, the faint trace of something floral beneath. “Or perhaps they don’t. I haven’t decided which is more dangerous.”

She reached past you, her fingers hovering over the symbol you’d drawn at the edge of the wasteland—a spiral you’d invented to fill empty space.

“This,” she said. “I’ve seen this before.”

What happens next is up to you.
