The Night Custodian's Maze
You know every locked door and hidden passage—now you must use them to save the trapped expedition.
You're the night custodian at Ashworth University's museum, a labyrinth of galleries and storerooms that you know better than anyone. When a cursed artifact activates, trapping the museum's most prominent expedition inside a shifting maze of exhibits, you're the only one who can navigate the building's secrets. But as the maze grows more deadly and the lines between exhibits and reality blur, you must decide who to trust—and what you're willing to lose to get them out. A survival adventure where the janitor's keys might be the greatest treasure of all.
The story begins
The mop handle slipped from your grip, clattering against the marble floor of the Egyptian wing. The sound was swallowed by something far worse—a low, resonant hum that vibrated through the soles of your worn shoes. You'd spent seven years walking these halls, knew the groan of every radiator, the whisper of every draft. This was none of those.
The display case at the far end of the gallery glowed like embers breathing. Inside, the golden scarab—the one the expedition had been crowing over all evening—throbbed with a sickly amber light. You'd locked the doors behind them at nine, watched Professor Voss wave off your offer of a flashlight with that dismissive flick of her wrist. Now, from somewhere beyond the wall, a muffled cry twisted through the plaster.
"Help—!"
The voice was Rook's, and it cut off with a wet, choking sound.
The glow pulsed. The floor beneath your feet shifted—a slow, grinding lurch, like the whole building had taken a breath. When you blinked, the corridor ahead was no longer the corridor you knew. The door to the Grecian hall had vanished, replaced by a wall of black stone carved with eyes.
The scarab hummed louder. It was waiting. And it knew you'd heard. The black stone wall rippled, and the carved eyes blinked—all at once, in the wrong direction. The hum dropped an octave, settling into your chest like a second heartbeat. Behind you, the familiar exit door still stood, a thin line of sodium light bleeding beneath it. The museum was choosing its paths now, and you had a choice to make.
Rook's cry had come from beyond the transformed wall. Professor Voss and her team had entered through the west stairwell hours ago—you'd logged their keycards, noted the time, filed it away like you did everything. The scarab had been dormant then. It had waited for silence.
The floor shifted again, a slow tectonic grind. Somewhere above, glass shattered. A bird—no, something with too many wings—crashed against a skylight and was gone.
Your radio crackled. Static. Then a voice you didn't recognize, thin and dry as old parchment: "Custodian. The maze feeds on indecision. Move, or it will feed on you."
The line went dead.
The glowing case pulsed brighter. In its light, you saw the wall of eyes begin to part—not a door, but a throat.
