The Salt Siege
MatureYou dive for a cure, and the sea collects your debts.
Your lungs are scarred from years in the deep mines, and your daughter's fever is burning away her future. The only cure lies in the Sunken Claim—a death-dive contest where champions drown and the prize goes to the last one breathing. With your rival the undefeated tide-walker and the ocean itself conspiring against you, every surface is a lie and every breath a gamble. Can you outdive the depths and cheat the sea's hunger for your life?
The story begins
The salt wind lashes the pier as you pull the borrowed suit's zipper to your throat, the rubber cold against your scarred lungs. Dawn bleeds orange over the Sunken Claim, and the crowd's roar is a dull hum beneath the crash of the tide. Lyra's small hand grips yours, her fingers hot with fever, and you force a smile you don't feel.
"Watch me, little star," you say, and she nods, her eyes too bright.
Maren Vex stands at the water's edge, her suit gleaming black, her face a carved mask. She doesn't look at you—she looks at the sea, and for a heartbeat, you see it. The tremor in her jaw. The thing she's afraid of.
"Last chance to turn back, miner," she says, her voice carrying over the wind. "The Claim doesn't bury cowards gently."
You tighten the strap of your wife's cracked compass around your neck. The needle spins, then settles—pointing not to true north, but to the trench's heart. As if it knows.
The horn sounds. The water takes you both.
