The Undercover Ruin
MatureYou guide the expedition that destroyed your home—and the survivor you betrayed has just walked into camp.
You are a guide with a shattered past, leading a treasure-hunting expedition into the ruins that once held your people's sacred relics. The expedition's patron is the warlord who burned your village and murdered your kin, and you've spent months wearing a mask of loyalty. But when a survivor from your village—someone you thought dead—arrives at the camp, your cover begins to crack. Now, as the expedition closes in on the fabled vault, you must decide: help the killer you serve claim the treasure, or use the ruin's secrets to expose the truth and avenge your people, even if it means sacrificing everything you've built. With clues hidden in the very stones and the survivor's eyes watching your every move, this adventure of survival and betrayal will test your allegiance to the breaking point.
The story begins
The rope bit into your palms as you hauled yourself onto the ledge, dust and grit raining down your forearms. Below, the expedition's torches flickered in the deepening dusk of the ruin's outer hall, and Kaelen's voice echoed off the fractured stone, sharp and impatient. "Well? Is it passable?"
You let the silence stretch, scanning the cracked archway ahead. The old glyphs were still legible—your mother's hand had traced them a thousand years ago, a warning about the sanctum's threshold. You knew the way. You'd known it from the moment you'd stepped into this tomb of your people's memory.
"It's clear," you called down, brushing dust from your tunic. "But the floor's unstable. I'll go ahead and test the path."
Kaelen grunted, satisfied. Behind him, a woman stepped into the torchlight—lean, dark-haired, her gaze sharp as a blade. Sera. Alive. The breath caught in your throat, and you gripped the rope tighter, forcing your face to stillness as she looked up at you. She didn't recognize you. Not yet.
"Who's that?" she asked Kaelen, her voice carrying up like a challenge.
"My guide," he said. "The best there is."
