The Wreck of the Last Oath

Mature

You sunk the Meridian—now dive back into the black water with the widow you betrayed to claim its treasure.

You are an expedition diver with a criminal record, sentenced to retrieve the treasure of the Meridian, the ship you sabotaged years ago. But the government pairs you with the widow of the man who died in that wreck—the woman you left for dead. She knows the secret currents of the wreck, you know the alarms you set, and between you, the dead demand an answer. With one respirator and a leaky diving bell, you must descend into the abyss together, where every second is a gamble with the dark.

The story begins

The diving bell groaned around you, a coffin of riveted iron swaying on its cable. Cold seeped through the hull plating, and the leak Maren had pointed out—with a smile that never reached her eyes—had already painted your boot with a sheen of black water.

She stood across from you, her face half-shadowed by the single hissing lamp. Her fingers traced the glass of the porthole, tracing the darkness beyond. Three hundred feet of pressure waited out there, and the storm was already muting the bell's creaks with the distant percussion of waves above.

"You remember the main hold layout?" you asked, the words too loud in the cramped space.

"I remember my husband's charts." She turned, and the lamp caught the hard line of her jaw. "I remember everything he ever drew. Do you remember what you did, diver?"

The bell shuddered. The cable stopped its descent with a jerk that knocked you both sideways. Through the porthole, the Meridian's bow emerged from the murk—a skeletal rib cage of rust and barnacles, her hull split open like a wound that never healed.

Maren pressed her palm to the glass. "He's waiting for us."

What happens next is up to you.
