The Viceroy's Mask

You're a courier mistaken for a legendary explorer—now every step into the jungle could be your last.

You're a lowly courier who stumbled into a war camp, and everyone thinks you're the legendary explorer who was supposed to arrive with the only map to the Sunken Throne. The real explorer is dead, the warlord is watching, and every step deeper into the jungle the map reveals a truth that could get you killed. With betrayal lurking at every turn and a map that's more than it seems, you must survive the expedition and uncover the secret that could topple a warlord. A jungle survival adventure where the treasure is not what it appears, and the greatest threat might be the truth.

The story begins

The tent flaps slammed behind you, cutting off the camp's noise and plunging you into a world of oil smoke and furs. The Warlord sat on a crude throne of lashed timber, his scarred face a study in patient cruelty. He didn't speak. He just held out his hand, palm up.

You'd seen the explorer's body. The arrow through his throat, the journal still warm in his pack. You'd had exactly the time it took to drag him into the undergrowth to skim it. Now, the weight of that leather-bound lie pressed against your ribs.

"Well?" His voice was gravel and iron.

You let out a breath you hadn't realized you were holding. "The map's not on parchment, Warlord. It's in here." You tapped your temple. "The explorer didn't trust ink. Too easy to steal."

His eyes narrowed, calculating. A long silence stretched, the torches sputtering.

"And you expect me to believe a courier carries the Sunken Throne in his head?"

"I expect you to want what I have. The rest is your choice." Your heart hammered, but your voice stayed level.

The Warlord smiled. It was not a pleasant sight. "Then you'll lead the expedition. My soldiers will ensure you stay... motivated." He gestured, and a man stepped from the shadows—lean, dark-eyed, watching you with an unreadable intensity. "This is the Scout. He knows the jungle. You'll learn to trust each other."

The Scout said nothing. He simply looked at you as if weighing your worth in coin.

What happens next is up to you.
