In a coastal city ravaged by plague, you are the only person who can read the deadly currents of the Fog Sea—a skill that made you a recluse and a legend. When a rebel leader's desperate plan requires a rare flower from the sea's final uncharted island, you must guide a ragtag expedition through storms that have claimed every ship before. But the sea holds more than poison, and the mission will force you to confront the ghosts you've been fleeing. Will you risk everything for a cure that may not exist?
The story begins
The rope burns your palms as you haul the skiff onto the shingle, salt spray stinging the cracked skin of your knuckles. The fog has rolled in thick tonight, swallowing the harbor lights until the city behind you is nothing but a memory of amber glow and coughing. Your breath fogs in the cold, and you taste the plague on the wind—that faint, metallic sweetness that clings to the quarantined wards.
You haven't sailed in three years. Not since the Marrow went down with all hands, swallowed by the acid mists off Blackrock Reef. But the rebel leader found you anyway, pressed a crumpled map into your palm with fingers that trembled despite his calm voice.
"The sun's heart," he'd said. "Last island. It's real. I've seen the charts."
You'd laughed in his face. Then he'd shown you the quarantine manifest—names, hundreds of them, your old crewmate's sister among the condemned.
Now the skiff's hull grinds against wet stone, and a figure waits at the waterline. Hooded, slight, utterly still.
"You came," the rebel leader says, stepping into the lantern's weak circle. "Good. We sail at dawn—if you're still the man who taught the Fog Sea to fear him."
