You've spent a decade running from the smoldering ghosts of your past, but when your brother's desperate letter reaches you, you know the time has come to return to the foundry town that raised you. The furnace, which everyone believes you crippled, still blazes with an unnatural heat, and the town's survival hinges on the very scrap-golem you once fought to stop. Now, with the one person who knows the truth—and has never forgiven you—standing in your way, you must decide whether to finish what you started or finally make amends.
The story begins
The ash was in your lungs before you reached the gate. Ten years, and the town still tasted like grief and burnt iron. The furnace glow painted the low clouds a sickly orange, and the scrap-golem stood sentinel at the foundry's broken arch—a mountain of riveted plates and hissing steam, its single cyclopean eye tracking your approach with terrible patience.
You hadn't come back for the town. You'd come back for the message, scrawled in your brother's hand: She knows. She's going to try to kill it.
Cassia stood in the square, her back to you, one hand resting on the golem's massive piston-leg as if it were a loyal hound. The other held a wrench slick with oil. She didn't turn when your boots crunched on the slag.
"You've got a lot of nerve," she said, voice flat as the dead furnace at her feet. "Standing there like the ash doesn't remember you."
The golem's eye whirred, focusing. A low rumble built in its chest—not a threat. Something closer to recognition. Or warning.
