The Ashen Oath

You and your estranged brother must brave the ash-veiled ruins to save your village—if you don't kill each other first.

Your village is dying from a plague, and the only cure lies buried in the ashen ruins of a cursed city. Your brother, the one whose greed ruined your family's name, is the only other person who can navigate the deadly paths. Forced to trust the man you blame for everything, every step deeper into the ruins tests whether you'll save him or let him fall. Can you put aside your hatred to find the cure, or will your quest for revenge doom you all?

The story begins

The ash swallowed your boots up to the ankle, each step a labor against the gray tide that had buried the old city. Your breath came in short, sharp clouds, and the cold seeped through the wool of your coat like a judgment. Behind you, Kael’s footsteps faltered, then stopped.

“We’re going the wrong way,” he said, his voice thin against the wind.

You didn’t turn. You couldn’t. The map fragment in your pocket felt heavier than stone, its edges worn smooth from years of your thumb tracing its lies. You’d memorized every line, every mark, and none of them matched the crumbled archway ahead of you.

“You said the Temple of Embers was west of the Broken Spire.” Your voice came out flat, tired.

“I said I thought it was west.”

You finally turned. Kael stood shivering, his gambler’s grin nowhere to be found. For a moment, you saw the boy who’d taught you to skip stones, not the man who’d sold your family’s honor for a handful of silver.

“Thought,” you repeated. “We’ve walked three days on thought.”

The ash shifted beneath his boots, and the ground groaned.

What happens next is up to you.
