The Binding of the Deep

Mature

You swore to guide a doomed crew to a sunken city, but the price is your very soul.

You are an oath-sworn navigator bound to a drowned god, tasked with guiding a crew of desperate explorers to the sunken city of Aeloria. But the contract's penalty is not death—it's the slow unmaking of your soul. Each day, you forget a little more: your name, your past, your self. The crew's safe return demands you break the only vow that holds you together, but doing so may destroy what's left of you. In the crushing dark of the abyss, the choice between your soul and their lives will define you forever.

The story begins

The deck of The Last Ebb shudders beneath your boots, a low groan of timber and iron that vibrates through your bones. Salt-crusted rope burns your palms as you haul on the guide line, the dim glow of a phosphorescent lantern casting your shadow long and thin across the corroded plating. Around you, the crew moves like ghosts, their faces smeared with the grime of the deep. You’ve been down three days. You already can’t remember the name of the man who hands you a fresh coil of line—only that his eyes are kind and his hands are scarred.

Ahead, the darkness thickens into something almost solid, and the water beyond the viewport presses with a weight you can feel in your teeth. Captain Voss stands at the helm, her silhouette hard against the gloom. She doesn’t look back when she speaks.

“Navigator. You feel it too?”

The question lands like a hook. You do feel it—the whisper beneath the hull, the pull of something vast and patient, coiling through the abyssal black. Your oath thrums in your chest, a second heartbeat that knows the way down.

What happens next is up to you.
