The Architect's Rehearsal

Mature

You are a stagehand in a theater where the plays are your own life—and tonight, the script ends with your death.

You are a stagehand in a grand theater, but the plays are not fiction—they are rehearsals for your life, and tonight's script ends with your death. The director is a ghost who has staged every moment of your existence, and if you break character before the final act, the play will unravel. But to survive, you must defy the ghost and rewrite the ending—even if it means facing the truth you've been hiding from.

The story begins

The prompt book hit the floor with a crack that echoed through the empty orchestra pit, and you froze, dust motes swirling in the single work-light above your head. Beyond the proscenium arch, a single figure in a black coat stood center stage, back to you, voice low and velvet as he spoke to the empty seats.

"And in the final act, the stagehand climbs the gantry to adjust the counterweight. The rope snaps. A fall, a clean break at the neck. The audience gasps—" he paused, tilting his head as if listening to applause only he could hear, "—and we close on darkness."

Your breath stopped. The rope. You'd oiled that pulley an hour ago, checked the knots, the same routine you'd performed a thousand times without question. But now the words landed like a cold hand on your spine.

The Director turned, slowly, and his pale eyes found you in the shadows. He smiled.

"Ah. There you are. We were just rehearsing your exit."

The stage lights buzzed. Somewhere above, the gantry groaned.

What happens next is up to you.
