The Beacon's Due

Mature

You inherit a lighthouse on a cursed reef, but the storm it commands demands your blood.

As a reclusive archivist, you receive an inheritance: a lighthouse on a reef that appears on no map. But the storm it commands is a living entity, hungry for sacrifice—and the sacrifice is the keeper's own blood, drawn each time the beacon turns. With every rotation, the sea grows more violent, and the cost of keeping it at bay is your life. Can you find a way to break the curse, or will you become the reef's next offering? A tale of survival and impossible choices on a lonely rock.

The story begins

The boat lurches beneath you, salt spray cold as a wet hand on your throat. The lighthouse looms against a bruised sky, its beam cutting a dull, rhythmic arc through the storm that has already swallowed the horizon. Your hands are white knuckles on the wheel, knuckles that ache from the cold and the grip. You're not a sailor. You've never been able to swim. The deed in your jacket pocket feels heavier than the engine that sputters beneath your boots.

The dock is a slick, rotting tongue of wood that groans as you tie off. The wind whips your coat, and for a moment you hear it—your name, torn from the gale and thrown against the rocks. You freeze. The lighthouse door stands open, its iron hinges screaming a slow, rusted complaint. A figure stands just inside the threshold, a dim, flickering shape that doesn't quite cast a shadow.

"Leave," the figure says, its voice a dry rustle of pages. "Before the storm takes you."

You step onto the dock. The door slams shut, and the word leave is swallowed by the howl of the wind.

What happens next is up to you.
