The Last Bell-Ringer

Mature

You ring the bells that hold back the flood, but the leviathan hears them too—and your voice is failing.

In a sunken city, you are the last bell-ringer, the only one who can sound the great bells that keep the sea at bay. But the bells are also a siren's call to the leviathan that feeds on the faithful, and each toll brings it closer to the surface. With the storm three days out and your voice already a whisper, you must decide: silent the bells and drown, or ring them and call the beast to devour the city's last hope. Your choice will determine whether the faithful survive—and whether you remain human.

The story begins

The rope is coarse and familiar in your hands, a second skin worn smooth by years of faithful grip. Your chest burns with each heave, the great bronze bell above you shuddering with a sound that is less music and more a heartbeat—the city's heartbeat, the only thing between the living and the swallowing dark.

Through the arched window of the bell-tower, you see the flood below, black and patient, lapping at the lower tiers of drowned buildings. The storm-dark sky churns on the horizon, three days out, and you feel it in your bones like a coming ache.

Your voice cracks on the toll—a discordant note that makes your teeth ache. Elder Morwen stands in the shadow of the stairwell, her blind eyes fixed on you as if she can see the light draining from your face.

"The sea is restless tonight," she says, her voice like dry leaves. "It knows the bells are weakening."

You know she is not speaking of the storm. Something else stirs beneath the water, something vast and patient.

Pali's voice rings up from below, sharp with urgency: "Elder! The water's risen another handspan—it's not stopping!"

What happens next is up to you.
