The Hollow Return

Mature

You return to your ancestral island to reclaim your birthright, but the cliffs are hollowed by a mine that feeds on memories—and your family is the fuel.

After a decade of exile, you return to your ancestral island, expecting to reclaim your birthright. Instead, you find the cliffs hollowed by a dark mine that feeds on memories, and the family you left behind has become the fuel. To save them, you must descend into the hollow and confront the thing you abandoned. A tale of survival, dark secrets, and the impossible choice between your heritage and your humanity.

The story begins

The salt wind tore at your coat as you crested the cliff path, the island sprawled below like a wound. A decade gone, and this was what remained: chimneys cold, fields gone to gorse, and beyond them, the cliffs — those familiar green heights — now gouged open by black scars of scaffolding and winches. The Hollow.

You had pictured homecoming: fires, arguments, Maren's sharp laugh. Instead, a low hum vibrated up through your boots, a sound like the island itself groaning in its sleep.

"That'll be the works," said a voice behind you. An old woman, her face familiar — you remembered her name was Sable, she had sold honey at the fair — stood with a basket of limp seaweed, her eyes fixed on the mine. "They take the memories now, not just the ore." She turned, and something in her gaze was missing, a flatness behind the recognition. "You're the eldest. Come back for what's yours, then? Best hurry. Your sister's been in there three days straight."

The hum deepened, thrumming in your chest, and you felt it — a tug, almost a hunger, pulling toward the dark mouth of the mine. Somewhere inside, Maren. And somewhere deeper, the thing that had taken your family's pasts, one bright thread at a time.

What happens next is up to you.
