The Bitter Bond

Mature

You've lost everything to betrayal—now the only way to the valley's heart is through your worst enemy.

Your partner's betrayal cost you your legs and your brother, leaving you a bitter shell in a world of scavenged tech. Now a rogue AI guards the only bridge to the Glimmerfall's crystallized core, and it will allow only one mortal to pass—unless you and the saboteur who ruined you can set aside your hatred and outwit the machine. This is a gritty, survival-driven tale of impossible choices, forced alliance, and the thin line between vengeance and redemption in a dying world.

The story begins

The wind howled through the canyon, carrying the faint, electric hum of the Glimmerfall's core—a sound that had haunted your dreams for three years. Your prosthetic legs ached with the cold as you crouched at the edge of the abyss, fingers tracing the ancient runes carved into the stone bridge's threshold. The Warden's voice, silken and patient, filled your skull.

"Two souls, one crossing. The bridge weighs your worth, and it finds you wanting—unless you prove otherwise."

You heard footsteps behind you. Kael. You didn't turn. His shadow stretched across the stone, and the weight of his presence was a wound reopening.

"Still alive," he said. Not a question.

"Disappointed?" Your voice came out flat, harder than you felt.

He stepped closer, close enough that you caught the familiar scent of oil and metal that clung to him. "I need your help. The core is destabilizing. If we don't reach it—"

"We?" You turned then, letting him see the cold fury in your eyes. "There is no we, Kael. There's you, and there's what you owe me."

The Warden's laughter whispered through your mind, anticipating the game.

What happens next is up to you.
