The Cartographer's Curse

You inherit a map shop where every map is a door—and one of them leads to your family's forbidden secret.

Your grandfather's map shop is crumbling, and the maps inside are living doorways to the places they depict. But the map to the vault that holds your family's forbidden secret is missing, and the shop is collapsing into the in-between. To find it, you must traverse the maps, each a dangerous journey into the unknown. Can you uncover the truth before the shop—and your chance—vanishes forever?

The story begins

The bell above the door didn’t ring—it sobbed, a rusty, mournful note that died into dust. You ducked as a shelf groaned overhead, shedding a cascade of brittle paper and the sharp smell of old glue. The shop was dying. You could feel it in the floorboards, soft as rot under your boots.

Grandfather’s handwriting stared up from the yellowed letter in your fist: Do not open the vault map. Whatever you think you know, you don’t.

“Is that the one?”

You spun. The Last Assistant stood in the doorway to the back room, silhouette thin as a pencil stroke, eyes catching the dim light like wet stone. They tilted their head.

“The one he told you never to open,” they said, softer. “Because it’s the one that opens him.”

Somewhere above, a floorboard cracked—not from age. Something in the in-between was pressing through the walls, and the air tasted like copper and ozone.

You had hours, maybe less, before the shop folded in on itself.

What happens next is up to you.
