The Cartographer's Folly

Mature

You chart the Serpent's Maw, where every line you draw could doom a thousand lives.

You are the realm's finest mapmaker, hired to chart the Serpent's Maw—a labyrinth where reality twists at every turn. But your patron is the warlord who burned your village, and the map you draw could doom a thousand innocent lives. One wrong line, and you're dead; draw the truth, and you're a traitor. The impossible choice: serve the monster who destroyed your home, or betray your oath—and yourself.

The story begins

The lantern swung in your grip, its light carving a pale scar across the obsidian throat of the Serpent's Maw. Behind you, the camp had shrunk to a smear of amber and the reek of cookfires. Ahead, the passage exhaled a breath that smelled of dust and old copper, and something else—something that made the hairs on your arms lift.

Warlord Kael's voice cut through the hush. "You said the entrance was stable."

You didn't turn. "The entrance is. The geometry beyond isn't. I've mapped a hundred caves; none of them breathe."

A pause. Then the crunch of his boots on scree. He stood at your shoulder, a furnace of leather and iron, his shadow swallowing the lantern's glow. "Then make it stop breathing. I need those lines, mapmaker. My war waits on your ink."

Lyra slipped past you both, silent as a dropped stone. She pressed her palm to the wall, then drew it back. Her fingers were trembling. "Grenn," she said softly, "tell them what you told me."

The old mapmaker shuffled into the light, his eyes fixed on the floor, on a place where the stone had been scored with a sigil—not yours. Not his. Older. "It's still here," he whispered. "The mark I left. Twenty years ago."

The passage groaned, a deep mineral sigh, and the walls shifted a hand's width closer.

What happens next is up to you.
