The Debt Comes Due

Mature

You owe your life to a stranger—now they're calling in the debt.

Years ago, a mysterious stranger saved your life in the Desert of Echoes. Tonight, they're at your door, and the debt is due: guide them to a lost city where no one returns. But the deeper you go, the clearer it becomes—they're not here for treasure, they're here for you. A dark, desert-spanning survival adventure where every step tightens the noose of an impossible obligation.

The story begins

The wind tore across the dunes, flinging grit against the warped boards of your shack. You’d been mending a torn waterskin, needle and sinew in hand, when the shadow fell across the threshold. You didn’t look up. You didn’t need to. The air changed, carrying the scent of old dust and something metallic, like blood left to dry in the sun.

“You’ve kept me waiting,” the Stranger said. Their voice was low, smooth as the worn stone of a riverbed, and it slid under your skin like a splinter you couldn’t dig out.

You set the waterskin down, slowly, and finally raised your eyes. They stood there, wrapped in a cloak the color of burnt umber, hood thrown back to reveal a face you remembered too well. The scar that cut through their left brow. The eyes too dark to read, holding a glint that had haunted your nights for seven years.

“I saved your life,” they said, stepping closer. The floorboards groaned beneath their weight. “Now I’m calling in the debt.”

You felt the weight of that night settle between your ribs. The storm. The blood. The hand that dragged you from the sand.

“What do you want?”

The Stranger smiled, and it didn’t reach their eyes. “Zereth. You’re going to take me there.”

What happens next is up to you.
