The Puppet Master's Map

You've been groomed to explore a world you were never meant to see—now the map to your own truth is in your hands.

You've spent your life as the perfect explorer, trained by a mysterious benefactor who shaped your entire world—your town, your friends, your memories. When they die, you inherit a map that leads to the source of your own construction. To survive the wilderness ahead, you must unravel the lie you call home, and every step brings you closer to the truth—and the impossible choice between the life you were given and the one you were denied.

The story begins

The smell of rain-wet earth filled the clearing, but you noticed it only distantly, the way you noticed everything now—as data. Your fingers trembled over the map's surface, its ink shifting like live currents beneath your touch. The Archivist had called it sentient, but you'd dismissed that as old-woman whimsy. Yet here, in the last glade before the treeline, the map had begun to hum.

A twig snapped behind you.

You turned, blade already half-drawn, and found the Rival Explorer standing at the treeline's edge—smiling, hands open, but eyes fixed on the parchment in your grip. "He left you that, did he?" Their voice was honeyed, but the edges frayed. "Funny. He told me it was mine."

You didn't answer. The map's lines writhed, and for a moment you swore it re-drew the forest around you—showing a path that shouldn't exist between the oaks, a path that didn't appear on any chart you'd ever studied.

The Rival took a step forward. "I could take it, you know. I've trained just as long. But the Benefactor always did favor your clever hands."

What happens next is up to you.
