The Debt to the Deep
You owe a sea witch a life, and tonight she demands you steal a pearl from a kraken-guarded vault.
You owe a debt to a sea witch who saved you from drowning, and tonight she calls it due: steal a pearl from a rival's vault, guarded by the last living kraken. But when you get close to the pearl, you find it holds the key to your own buried identity—you are the lost heir of the drowned kingdom, and the kraken knows it. Will you honor the debt that gave you a second life, or claim the truth that could topple the sea's oldest powers? Dive into this tale of survival, hidden identity, and the impossible choice between gratitude and destiny.
The story begins
The sea witch’s lair smelled of brine and cold iron, the walls alive with the slow pulse of jellyfish light. You stood in the archway, still dripping from the flooded tunnel, the locket cold against your chest. She circled you once, bare feet silent on the barnacled floor, her hair a drift of pale tendrils.
“Ten years,” she said, voice like the tide pulling back. “I gave you breath when the deep took you. I gave you a life.”
You felt the debt settle on your shoulders, heavier than the water pressing against the glass walls. Outside, a leviathan’s shadow glided past, indifferent.
“Tonight, you repay me.” She held up a hand, and in her palm shimmered a map etched onto a scale of some ancient fish. “The merchant-king’s vault. The pearl of the drowned kingdom. Bring it to me before sunrise, and your debt is paid.”
“And if I refuse?”
Her smile was a crack in the seafloor. “Then the water reclaims what it lent.”
The map burned cold in your grip. You’d stolen before—small things, for survival. This was something else. This was a crown’s worth of history.
