The Facade Keeper

You keep a light on a world that isn't real—now the stranger asking you to leave may be the final layer of the lie.

Your quiet life as a lighthouse keeper on a remote cliff is shattered when a stranger arrives, claiming your entire world is a stage—your memories, your neighbors, even the storms are manufactured to keep you docile. He needs you to escape through a forgotten cave, but you can't trust whether he's a rescuer or the next layer of the lie. As the fabricated world begins to crack, you must decide who you are when everything you've known is scripted. This slow-burn survival mystery will test your sanity and your will to break free.

The story begins

The storm had been screaming for three days when the stranger’s boat slammed against the rocks below the lighthouse. You saw it from the lantern room—a dark splinter of wood swallowed by foam, then a figure hauling itself onto the jetty, moving with the desperate economy of a man who knew the sea wanted him dead.

You met him at the base of the tower, oilskin whipping around your legs. He was wiry, soaked to the bone, and when he looked up, his eyes held the flat gray of the horizon before a squall. He didn't thank you for the rope you threw. He just stared, water dripping from his beard, and said, "You don't remember me, do you?"

The words landed like a stone in your chest. You should have said no. You did say no. But your voice came out thin, and his smile was slow, sad, and entirely unsurprised.

"Good," he said. "That means the cycle is still holding."

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small, salt-crusted compass. The needle spun clockwise, then counter, then settled on nothing at all.

"May I come in?" he asked. "Before the village sees me."

What happens next is up to you.
