The Imposter's Map
MatureYou've never read a map in your life, but you'll have to fake it to survive the ruin that holds a secret darker than any treasure.
You're a fraud, a last-minute stand-in for a famed explorer who was supposed to open the Sunken Archive—a labyrinth of traps and forgotten history. But you've never even held a compass, and your only hope is to bluff your way through the expedition's every test. The trouble is, every lie you tell brings you closer to the Archive's true secret: a truth the expedition's backers will kill to keep buried. With your life on the line and no one to trust, you must decide how far you'll go to keep the mask from slipping—and what you're willing to sacrifice to expose the corruption at the heart of the expedition. In a race against time and suspicion, your only advantage is that no one expects a fraud to be the one who uncovers the truth.
The story begins
The lantern swung in your grip, casting a wobbling pool of yellow light across the trap-scarred flagstones. Dust hung thick as fog, and somewhere ahead, water dripped with the slow, patient rhythm of a heartbeat. Kaelen stood at the mouth of the next chamber, his silhouette cut against the glow of his own lamp, and he did not turn around.
“You’re quiet tonight,” he said. Not a question. An accusation dressed in small talk.
You wiped a palm slick with sweat against your thigh. The forgery in your pocket—a cracked leather journal claiming to be the original explorer's—burned like a brand. Maren had been watching you since camp broke, her charcoal pencil never stopping, mapping your every gesture into a code you couldn't read.
“Quiet’s cheap,” you said. Your voice came out steadier than you felt.
Kaelen finally glanced back. His smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Good. Because the Archive isn’t. The next chamber tests nerve, not knowledge. I need you to walk in first.”
The trap door at his feet yawned open.
