The Inherited Storm
You inherit a lighthouse that isn't on any map, and the first storm brings a ship that shouldn't exist.
You've inherited a lighthouse on a cliff that appears on no chart, along with a ledger of debts owed by a hundred lost ships. When the first storm drags a ghostly vessel onto the rocks, you must decide: collect the debt or burn the book and let the truth sink. With the sea whispering secrets and the dead demanding payment, every choice could doom you or free you.
The story begins
The ledger hit the table with a thud that shook dust from the rafters. You'd found it in the study, wedged behind a loose floorboard, its leather cover cracked and slick with salt. The name on the first page was yours, written in ink so fresh it still glistened.
The storm had been building all evening, a low pressure that pressed against your skull. You'd come here to escape—to disappear into a job no one else wanted. But this book knew you. It listed debts owed by a hundred ships, and your name sat at the top of the final page, above a signature you didn't remember making.
Wind screamed through the lighthouse's stone walls. The lamp flared, then steadied, and from the cliff's edge below, a bell tolled once—a sound no living ship should make.
You crossed to the window. There, where the sea should have been a churning black, a three-masted vessel hung in the air, hovering above the rocks. Its sails were torn. Its hull was barnacled and bleeding green light. And on its deck, a man stood staring up at you, rain streaming down his face, his mouth moving in a word you could not hear but somehow understood:
Your name.
The bell tolled again. The ledger on the table began to glow.
