The Maw and the Inheritance

Mature

Your grandfather left you a key and a mountain that devours expeditions—now you must climb it to bury your mother.

You've inherited a rusted key and a map to the Maw, a mountain range that has swallowed every expedition sent to chart it. The deed to your family's land, and the right to bury your mother on ancestral soil, lies in the heart of that range. But the crown wants your land for a frontier fort, and the only way to stake your claim is to plant your grandfather's flag at the summit. The mountain is patient, gnawed with caverns, and the flag is not a flag—it's a warning written in bone. In this bleak survival adventure, you'll face treacherous climbs, ancient secrets, and the choice between legacy and freedom.

The story begins

The wind tasted of iron, and the cold had already sunk its teeth into you, sharp enough to cut through the wool of your mother's coat. The valley floor was a graveyard of cairns and rusted pickaxes, a silent testament to every fool who'd tried the Maw before you. Your grandfather's key—a jagged piece of black iron, warm as a living thing—weighed heavy in your breast pocket.

You pressed your palm against the stone marker, the deed crackling in your other hand, and felt the mountain settle. A groaning shift, like a beast turning over in its sleep. Then a voice, bright and unwelcome, cut the silence.

"Granddaughter of Anson Vane. I expected you a week ago."

Corvin Vane stood forty paces away, snow dusting the shoulders of his seal-skin coat. His smile was a careful calculation. Behind him, a chain of porters loaded mules with ropes, lanterns, and crates stamped with the crown's sigil.

"You found my grave marker," you said, nodding at the stone. "Not the summit."

He laughed, and it echoed strangely, as if the mountain laughed with him. "The summit, little Vane, is where I am going. With or without you." He tossed a rolled parchment at your feet. "The crown's claim supersedes your grandfather's fancy deed. But I am a generous man."

What happens next is up to you.
