The Witness's Burden
You saw the ritual that turned your protectors to salt—and now every dawn steals a piece of the truth.
Scavenge the sunken ruins of Ashfall for a rare relic, but when you witness a forbidden ritual that petrifies the city's guardians into salt pillars, you become the sole witness to a conspiracy. Flee with the evidence, yet each sunrise erodes your memory of that night. To expose the traitor within your own guild, you must race against the fading light before you forget what you saw—and who you can trust. A tense survival thriller of paranoia and sacrifice in a flooded world.
The story begins
The last gulp of air burned in your lungs as you kicked hard, silt swirling in your wake. Ashfall's drowned bell tower loomed above you, its dark arches like the eye sockets of a skull, and you had to get out. Your fingers brushed the relic in your chest pouch — a shard of polished black stone, still humming with the ritual's afterheat.
You broke the surface with a gasp, ripping the mask from your face. Dawn was bleeding gold across the sea, and the guild's scaffolded platform rose ahead, silhouettes moving against the light. But the water around you was wrong. Still. Too still.
You looked back.
The tower's base shimmered, and for a moment you saw them — the guardians, frozen mid-step, their armor fused into crystalline salt. The image seared your mind, and then it was gone, replaced by the ordinary ruin.
Your heart slammed. Already fading.
A rope ladder slapped the water beside you. "You look like you saw a ghost," Sera called down, her voice sharp. "Or worse. Get up before Mercer starts asking questions."
You gripped the ladder, the shard burning against your ribs.
