The Midnight Ledger

Your soul is collateral, and your only way out is the one place you can never enter again.

You are bound by a contract writ in blood and shadow, your life sworn to a creature that collects debts in flesh and memory. Tonight, it comes to claim its due—but instead of taking you, it offers a single, terrible chance at freedom: steal a relic from the Midnight Bastion, a floating fortress that appears only when the clock strikes twelve. In exchange, it will tear up the contract-marriage that has chained you to a monster. But the fortress's guardian is your estranged spouse, whom you thought dead, and they hold the one secret that can release you from both debts. With the clock ticking toward midnight, you must choose: trust your former partner and risk everything, or finish the heist alone and lose the only hope you've ever had.

The story begins

The chime of the Collector's pocket-watch still echoed in your skull as the Bastion's stone corridor folded itself behind you, the wall sliding shut with a wet, grinding sigh. Twelve chimes. You counted them all. The air here tasted of cold brass and old dust, and somewhere above, a gear the size of a cathedral turned in the dark.

You pressed your back to the wall, breath ragged. The contract burned against your ribs—the one that bound you to your spouse, and the new one, still warm from the Collector's pen. Steal the Chronos Relic before the clock strikes twelve, or surrender your soul. Simple, if you ignored the small print: the Warden will not rest, the walls will not hold, and the relic will not be found by the desperate.

A mechanical click sounded behind you. Then another. And another, in a descending scale of precision.

You'd been in the Bastion for less than a minute, and already the clockwork constructs had your scent.

A voice, soft and achingly familiar, drifted from the shadows ahead. "You always did pick the worst possible places to hide."

Your heart stumbled. You knew that voice. You'd married it.

What happens next is up to you.
