The Painted Cage

Mature

Your whole world is a canvas, but the truth is painted underneath.

In a walled settlement where the sky is a painted lie and water flows through black iron pipes, you've never questioned the order of things—until your brother is shot for scaling the wall. In the warden's office, you find your birth certificate, and it names another world as your origin. Now you must tear down the painted lies to find the truth before the warden's men reconstruct you into another obedient citizen. A gritty survival mystery where every brushstroke hides a secret and the only way out is to paint your own reality.

The story begins

The iron door of Warden Voss’s office still hangs crooked on its hinges when you hear the boots—three pairs, maybe four, clattering up the stairwell. Your brother’s blood is a brown smear on your cuff, dried hours ago but still warm in your memory. The paper in your fist is thin, almost translucent, and the ink is the same bureaucratic black as every other lie in Haven: Birthplace: Terraform Station Seven.

You’ve never heard of Terraform Station Seven. Neither have the painted birds wheeling in the canvas sky outside the window.

The boots stop outside. A voice—sharp, female, familiar—cuts through the wood. “She’s in there. Voss wants her reconstructed, not dead. Try not to break the merchandise.”

Your breath is too loud. The room smells of leather and old ink, and your brother’s body is still cooling somewhere near the wall he climbed.

You press your back against the filing cabinet, the certificate crinkling in your fist. The handle turns.

What happens next is up to you.
