The Painted Traitor

Your cover is cracking, and the treasure you seek may expose the truth you've hidden.

You are a cartographer embedded in a rival expedition, mapping uncharted territory while posing as one of them. But the crew's trust is fraying, and whispers of a spy grow louder. When you finally locate the fabled treasure, you discover it is a living creature—one that can sense your deception and reveal your true identity. Now you must choose: complete your survey and doom the creature, or betray your handlers to save it, risking everything for a secret that could get you killed.

The story begins

The rope burned through your gloves as you rappelled down the cliff face, the map in your satchel pressing against your ribs like a smuggled secret. Below, Kael's voice cut through the wind—sharp, accusatory, carried upward.

"That's the third time she's deviated from the route I charted. She's not mapping. She's hunting something."

You landed on the ledge beside him, unclipping your harness with practiced ease. Captain Elara Voss stood apart, her silhouette against the dying sun, watching you with an unreadable expression.

"Jealousy doesn't become you, Kael," she said, though her gaze lingered on you a beat too long. "She's earned her place."

Earned it. The words burned. You'd earned nothing here but a lie—your real map, the one folded in your boot, marked a path for a rival expedition that would strip this wilderness bare.

Kael stepped closer, close enough that you caught the woodsmoke and sweat on his collar. "Then why does she flinch every time someone says treasure?"

The wind howled through the gorge. Elara turned, her hand resting on her pistol.

"Because," you said, your voice steadier than your heart, "the treasure isn't what you think."

What happens next is up to you.
