The Pawn's Ascent

Mature

You were sold for a map—now the man who burned your name is your only way out.

You are a disgraced guide, sold by your own guild to a treasure-hunting noble as a bargaining chip for the map you once drew. Every step deeper into the jungle, you realize the noble's rival—the one who destroyed your reputation—is the only one who can get you out alive. But trust is a blade that cuts both ways, and the betrayal that brought you here is just the first of many in this survival adventure.

The story begins

The machete bit deep into the vine, and the blade sang its wet, ringing note. You pulled it free, wiped the sap on your thigh, and listened to the jungle breathe around you—a thousand small sounds layered like a living thing’s pulse. Behind you, Cassian’s boots squelched in the mud.

“Keep moving, guide,” he said, voice smooth as polished brass. “The sun’s burning.”

You didn’t turn. “The sun’s the least of what’s burning out here, my lord.”

Ahead, the canopy split, and the ruins rose from the green like a shattered ribcage—columns of pale stone, carved with spirals you’d mapped once, in a lifetime you no longer owned. Your fingers itched for your old journal. Cassian had it. Cassian had everything.

A rustle to your left. You caught it—a flash of dark cloth, a glint of steel. Adira. Of course she’d found you first.

Cassian’s hand landed on your shoulder, heavy, claiming. “Something wrong?”

You smiled, showing teeth. “Not yet.”

What happens next is up to you.
