The Puppet's Compass

Your greatest expedition was written by someone else—now cut the strings or be bound forever.

You are a celebrated explorer, but every triumph, every map, even your romantic history, was engineered by a shadowy patron who now demands one final expedition. A rival explorer, groomed to be your enemy, is your only ally. Together you must retrieve a relic that will bind you to your patron's will forever—or find a way to break the strings. In a world of treacherous landscapes and manipulated truths, the greatest danger may be your own desire to believe the lies.

The story begins

The lantern light flickered across the Puppet Master's face, carving hollows where warmth should have been. Their voice, silk over broken glass, had just finished explaining the architecture of your entire life—every triumph, every heartbreak, every map that bore your name.

You stood at the edge of their obsidian desk, knuckles white against the polished surface. The relic's sketch lay between you: a jagged shard of crystallized starfall, waiting in the Sunken Temple of Vhalara, three weeks' hard travel through the Thornveil Mountains and the Drowned Hollows.

"Free me," you said, the words scraping past a throat gone dry. "That's the bargain."

The Puppet Master smiled, and it was the smile of someone who had already won. "Touch the relic, return it to me, and I will sever every string I've ever pulled. Your fame, your freedom, your future—all yours, untangled."

The lie tasted like copper in the air. You'd spent a decade reading people across a thousand campfires; you knew a trap when you saw one. But the door behind you was locked, and the only other soul in this room was the one person you'd been trained to destroy.

Your rival stepped from the shadows, arms crossed, eyes burning with a hatred that felt almost like recognition.

"Don't trust a word," they said. "But don't go alone either."

What happens next is up to you.
