The Saltbound Oath

Mature

Your contract is a curse, and the sea is the only way out.

Bound by a magical pact that devours you from within, you serve a ruthless treasure-hunting guild. Your next mission: recover the Pearl of Grit Reef from a treacherous, storm-wracked maze of razor-sharp coral. But the only navigator who can guide you through is the captain who betrayed you—and the contract forces you to trust her exactly once. Dive into a cutthroat world of nautical adventure, impossible choices, and a debt that demands everything.

The story begins

The contract's brand seared your forearm as you pushed through the tavern door — a fresh line of script curling like a whipcrack against your skin. Pearl of Grit Reef. Retrieve or forfeit.

You'd felt worse. The pain sharpened your senses, cutting through the salt-brine haze of the Bleeding Dock tavern like a blade through fog.

They'd found her at the corner table. Maren Vex — all brass buckles and scarred leather, a jagged grin spreading when her eyes caught yours. She looked harder than you remembered. The years had carved lines into her face like tide channels.

"Five years." Her voice was gravel and old rum. "And here you come crawling back, wearing the Guild's leash."

The brand pulsed. You didn't flinch.

"The contract demands a navigator."

"Does it, now?" She swirled the dregs of her drink, studying you with those sharp, knowing eyes. "And what does it do to you if I say no?"

She knew exactly what it did. She was testing the knife's edge of your desperation.

"There are other navigators," you said, though the lie tasted thin.

"Mmm." She leaned forward, elbows on the scarred wood. "But I'm the only one who's survived Grit Reef twice. You want to live, treasure hunter? You're going to need me to want the same."

What happens next is up to you.
