The Signature in the Sand

You found your own signature on a fifty-year-old survey marker—and now the guild wants you dead for it.

You've charted every island for the crown, but on a deserted atoll you discover a survey marker bearing your own signature—dated fifty years before you were born. Now you're the only person who knows the map is a lie, and the cartographer's guild is sending a cutter to silence you. With nothing but your instruments and a desperate hope, you must decode the truth behind your impossible signature and outrun the empire that made you. The ocean hides more than treasure; it hides the secret of your own past. Can you stay one step ahead of the guild's assassins and uncover the truth before they erase you from every map?

The story begins

The salt wind whipped your hair across your face as you knelt in the shallow tide pool, your fingers tracing the weathered survey marker. The bronze was pitted and green with age, but the engraving was unmistakable—your own hand, your own distinctive flourish on the M of Marsh. Your name. Dated forty-seven years before your first breath.

Your lungs seized as if the sea itself had filled them. You'd charted these waters for a decade, knew every reef and channel, and you'd never seen this marker. The atoll was supposed to be barren. Uncharted. Yours to claim.

A shout rang out across the water—sharp, commanding. You looked up. A guild cutter had rounded the southern headland, its black sails snapping in the wind like a raven's wing. Captain Vane's ship. You recognized the bronze figurehead, the scarred hull. He wasn't supposed to be here. No one was.

You scrambled back from the marker, sand clinging to your wet boots. The cutter was already dropping anchors. Too close. Too fast.

Your hand brushed the cold brass again. Your name. Your hand.

The first shot cracked across the bay.

What happens next is up to you.
