The Singing Bones

You are the last bone-caller, and the dead are whispering a treasure that could save your village—if it doesn't claim your life first.

You've buried your gift for a decade, but when famine grips your village, the only hope lies in the bones beneath the earth. As the last bone-caller, you can command the dead to speak the secrets of the treasure hoard—but each summons costs you a piece of yourself. With your family starving and the earth growing restless, you must decide: let the dead keep their secrets, or risk joining them forever. A survival story of sacrifice and forbidden power in a world where the price of salvation is your own soul.

The story begins

The council chamber stank of fear and tallow smoke. You stood at the center of the half-circle of elders, their faces carved from the same grey stone as the hills that walled this valley. Mara’s voice had just finished its plea—something about the harvest, about children with hollow bellies—but you heard none of it. Ten years had passed since you last touched a bone that wasn’t your own, and the memory of that night still sat in your chest like a splinter of ice.

“The treasure is legend,” you said, your voice flat. “There is nothing beneath those hills but the dead.”

The table shook. Kael had slammed his palm against it, his face flushed with a desperation you hadn’t seen since he was a boy. “Then let the dead feed us!” He was sweating, and you noticed the dirt caked under his nails—fresh earth, dark and rich. The barrows. He’d been digging again.

Mara’s eyes flicked to him, then back to you. “Your brother speaks out of turn, but he speaks the truth. The bones are stirring, bone-caller. We can all feel it.” Her voice dropped. “And your mother’s fever will not wait for your grief.”

The fire popped. From somewhere deep beneath your boots, you felt it—a faint, rhythmic pulse, like a heartbeat waking after a long sleep.

What happens next is up to you.
