The Starless Chartmaker

You are the last cartographer who can read the stars—and the only one who can chart a course through the Skygraveyard.

You are the last living cartographer who can read the stars through the cursed clouds that swallow ships and souls. When a dying captain offers you a fortune to map a route through the Skygraveyard, every chart you draw is a step closer to the dark thing that has been hunting your kind for generations. Navigate treacherous skies, outwit ruthless rivals, and decide how much of your humanity you'll sacrifice for the truth. With the fate of your lineage hanging in the balance, the impossible choice is clear: chart the course that will save you—or the one that will doom you all.

The story begins

The airship's deck shuddered beneath your boots, and you caught the railing as the Skygraveyard's first storm-front hit—a rolling wall of black cloud that swallowed the stars like a living hunger. You'd been reading the sky for nineteen years, and you'd never seen a pattern like this. The stars beyond the clouds didn't drift. They moved with intent.

Captain Elara Vex stood at the helm, her face a mask of calm despite the pallor of her skin, the tremor in her hand as she gripped the wheel. She was dying. You could smell it on her—a sweet, wrong rot beneath the salt and wind.

"Chart us through, star-reader," she said, not turning. "You're the only one who can."

Behind you, Mira clutched her satchel of blank charts, her eyes wide but steady. Kael leaned against the mast, watching you with a stillness that felt less like patience and more like calculation.

You raised your lens to your eye. The stars shifted. They were not where they should be.

They were watching you back. The stars rearranged themselves behind your lens—a constellation you'd never charted, one that burned with an amber light that made your teeth ache. You'd felt this before, that prickle at the base of your skull, that sense of being pinned like a moth to a board. But never this strong. Never this close.

"Captain," you said, lowering the lens. "We need to turn back. Now."

Elara's laugh was a dry, papery thing. "There's nothing behind us but debt and death. Ahead? Ahead there's a fortune and a cure." She touched her chest, where the ailment ate at her. "You think I'd risk this voyage for anything less?"

The ship lurched. Mira grabbed your arm, her fingers cold. "Master, the charts—they're moving. The ink is moving."

You spun. On the table, the chart you'd drawn hours ago had changed. The lines had shifted, coiling into a spiral that led straight to the heart of the Skygraveyard—and at its center, a single word, written in your own hand but not your own words:

COME.

What happens next is up to you.
