The Cartographer's Fire

Mature

You chart the land with ink that rewrites reality—and the Wound is offering you a map of your own bones.

As the empire's most gifted mapmaker, you've been dispatched to chart the Wound, a canyon where no surveyor has returned. But your maps aren't mere drawings—they are contracts that reshape the terrain itself. When you mark a path, the land bends to your will. Yet the Wound has its own cartographer, a living city that hungers for your hand to trace its streets across your flesh. Will you serve the empire that sent you to die, or sign your own flesh to a power that promises to make you eternal?

The story begins

The quill hovered a finger's width above the parchment, and the canyon held its breath.

You felt it—the way the stone shimmered in the dying sun, the ink in your inkwell pulsing like a second heartbeat. Captain Voss stood a pace behind you, her hand resting on the pommel of her sword, her shadow long and sharp across the outpost's cracked flagstones. She hadn't spoken in an hour, but her silence had weight, like a blade waiting in a sheath.

The commission lay unrolled on the stone table before you, its imperial seal gleaming with false authority. Map the lower depths. Chart the Wound. Do not fail.

But the Wound was watching you. You could feel it in the way the canyon walls leaned in, the way the glow veins pulsed beneath the rock like arteries, the way the air hummed with something that might have been a voice if you'd been brave enough to listen.

Voss shifted. "Make your mark, Cartographer. The sun's burning."

You touched the nib to parchment. The rock groaned.

What happens next is up to you.
