The Contradictory Ashes
MatureYou must trust the saboteur who burned your guild—or your own flawed memory—to find a treasure that may not exist.
After the fire that destroyed your guild, you set out across a continent of ruins with the one person who claims you burned theirs first. Neither of you remembers the same blaze, and every step tests your trust against the gaps in your memory. But the treasure at the end of your map only exists if you both believe in the same lie—and the truth might be more dangerous than either of you imagines. A tale of survival, betrayal, and the lies we tell ourselves.
The story begins
The smoke stung your eyes as you stood at the edge of what was once your guild hall. Charred beams jutted from the rubble like broken fingers, and the air tasted of ash and regret. Kael stood ten feet away, their scarred face half-lit by the dying embers that still crackled in the wreckage.
"Your people did this," they said, voice flat as a blade.
You didn't look at them. You couldn't. The flames had painted your memories in fragments—a door kicked open, a scream swallowed by fire, a hand reaching for yours through the smoke. But the face behind that hand? It blurred every time you tried to see it.
"I was there," you said, and your voice came out rougher than you meant. "I watched it burn."
"Then you watched your own people light it." Kael stepped closer, close enough that you smelled the copper of their blood and the salt of their sweat. "I lost seventeen in that fire. My guild. My family." A pause, weighted. "So tell me, leader—whose hand held the torch?"
The question hung in the smoky air between you. Your fingers brushed the folded map in your coat pocket—the one you didn't remember drawing, the one that might lead to a vault that could rebuild everything. If it was real. If any of this was.
Mira's voice cut through the silence from behind you, small and tight. "We should move. Something's watching us from the treeline."
