The Cracking Mask

You don't know whose side you're on—but the syndicate is closing in.

You wake from a near-fatal accident with no memory of your past—only a badge of loyalty to the Crimson Cartel, a ruthless relic-hunting syndicate, and a cryptic warning scrawled in your own hand: 'Trust no one.' As you're thrust back into a world of ancient ruins and deadly rivals, fragments of a different life surface—meetings with rebels, whispered plans, a name that isn't yours. But the cartel's leader watches your every move, and one slip could reveal the traitor beneath the mask. Can you piece together your true identity before the syndicate's shadow engulfs you—and before the rebels you might have betrayed come for their revenge?

The story begins

The canvas of the tent flap whipped open, and the harsh desert sun slammed into your skull like a hammer. You flinched, the movement sending a lance of pain through your temple, where a bandage crusted with dried blood sat rough against your skin. The air tasted of dust and antiseptic.

Vex stood silhouetted in the entrance, a broad-shouldered figure in a crimson duster. He didn't enter; he just watched you with the still patience of a predator. “Good,” his voice was a low rumble, carrying a deceptive warmth. “You’re awake. We were starting to think the rebels did more than just crack your skull.”

You pushed yourself up on your elbows, the thin cot groaning beneath you. Your mind was a fog, a blank slate where months, maybe years, should have been. But your body remembered things your mind didn't—the weight of a knife at your hip, the way your fingers itched to trace a route across a map you couldn't see.

“The rebels,” you repeated, the word tasting foreign. A flash of an image—a woman’s face, urgent, pleading—cut through the haze, then vanished.

Vex’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of something cold passing through them. “Yes. They ambushed our convoy. You took one to the head for the cause.” He stepped closer, the floorboards groaning. “We move out at dusk. There’s a ruin we need you to find. And I need to know I can trust the scout leading the way.” He leaned in, his breath warm and smelling of stale coffee. “Can I?”

What happens next is up to you.
