The Debtor's Lantern

Mature

You owe a debt in blood, and the chapel below is hungry for your memories.

When the Guild of Lanterns comes to collect a debt your father signed in your blood, you have one chance to escape damnation: retrieve the Severed Candle from the Sunken Chapel. But the chapel is a living labyrinth that breathes, its dead keepers demand payment in memories, and every step risks losing the very self you're trying to save. Will you sacrifice everything to buy back your soul?

The story begins

The cold shock of the river water hit you before your boots touched the chapel floor. You'd been running for an hour—through the Guild's burning torches, past the crumbling aqueduct where your father's ghost had first whispered break the debt—and now you stood knee-deep in a flooded nave, your lantern hissing against the damp.

The light it cast was wrong. It threw your shadow against the walls in three directions, and each shadow moved a half-second behind you. The moth-eaten Keeper's voice still rang in your ears: Dawn, debtor. The Candle, or your soul.

Your breath fogged the air. Somewhere ahead, water dripped in a rhythm that almost sounded like a heartbeat. The map in your pocket—drawn in your own blood, still wet—itched against your thigh, and the ledger-scars on your wrists burned where the Guild had cut their mark.

Then the chapel breathed. The walls shifted, stone grinding on stone, and the water around you receded, then surged, and you felt the current pull toward a gap in the far wall where the dark was absolute.

Behind you, the Keeper's lantern-light flickered at the entrance. He hadn't followed. Not yet.

But he would.

What happens next is up to you.
