The Ember Singer
You are the last ember-singer, and the warlord's war-pyres will cost you your soul—but refusing will cost you your family.
In a world swallowed by frost-fogs, you are the last ember-singer, able to ignite eternal flames that hold back the cold. But every flame you sing consumes a piece of your soul, and when a warlord captures your village, he demands you light his war-pyres—or watch your family burn. Forced to choose between sacrificing your essence and saving those you love, you must decide how much of yourself you're willing to lose in this gritty survival epic.
The story begins
The warlord’s blade lay across his knees like a sleeping thing, patient and cruel. His breath plumed in the cold between you, and behind him, a hundred fires guttered in the camp—but you felt their hunger. They wanted more. They always wanted more.
“Sing,” he said, and the word was a stone dropped into still water. “Light my pyres, and your village lives. Refuse, and I will feed them to the frost-fogs myself.”
Your fingers ached from the last song you’d sung at dawn, the small flame that kept the Elder’s bones warm. You remembered its cost: the taste of your mother’s laughter, gone now, swallowed by fire. You couldn’t remember her face anymore.
Behind you, your sister’s hand found yours, small and trusting. She didn’t understand. She thought you could fix anything.
The frost-fog crept at the edge of the camp, a pale tongue licking the snow. It was closer than yesterday. Hungrier.
The Elder’s words echoed in your skull: There is another way. He’d told you that, then fallen silent, coughing dust.
The warlord tilted his head, waiting.
