The Key Beneath the Light
Your lighthouse hides the key to a mythic city—and the hunters are coming.
You are a lighthouse keeper on a storm-battered cliff, living a simple life of solitude and routine. But when you discover that your entire world—the village, the weather, even your memories—was constructed by a secret order of cartomancers, you find yourself hunted. Beneath your floorboards lies a key that could unlock the wasteland's only path to a city of myth. Will you flee with the key, or use it to unlock a destiny you never asked for? An epic adventure of survival and self-discovery awaits.
The story begins
The floorboard groaned before it gave way—a sound like a bone breaking—and you froze, crowbar still in your fist. The storm had been hammering the lighthouse for three days, but this was the first silence it had left behind. A hollow space beneath your kitchen floor, just large enough for a rusted iron key and a scrap of parchment, folded into a square no bigger than your palm.
You picked the key up first. It was warm. That should have been impossible.
The parchment unfolded itself, almost eagerly, revealing a coastline that didn't match anything you'd ever charted from the tower. A city sketched in faded ink, its spires reaching toward a sky you didn't recognize. The Cartographer's city, the margin read in a hand too neat to be accidental. The one they buried.
Then you heard it—the crunch of boots on the gravel path below, too deliberate for a neighbor's visit. Too fast for a friend. Two sets, maybe three.
The key hummed against your palm, and the lighthouse lamp above you flickered out for the first time in eleven years.
