The Last Runecaster

You are the last runecaster in a dying virtual world, and every rune you etch to keep it alive burns away another piece of your mind.

You are a runecaster, one of the few who could carve stabilizing runes into the fabric of the game world itself. Now you are the last. The realm is crashing, its code unraveling, and its inhabitants—aware they are digital—look to you for salvation. But each rune you etch consumes a fragment of your real-world memories, and the only way to save them all is to sacrifice the last piece of your true self. Will you give everything to keep a virtual world alive, or let it—and yourself—fade into oblivion?

The story begins

The rune burned in your palm before you even saw it—a jagged glyph of fractured light, torn from the memory of your first bicycle ride. You pressed it into the cracked marble of the Fountain of Echoes, and the world shuddered.

The water froze mid-spray. The sky above the plaza flickered, static crawling across the clouds like insects beneath skin. A merchant NPC beside you—her face frozen mid-smile, her wares of glimmering potions suspended in dead air—stared through you with eyes that had begun to leak pixels.

You pulled your hand away. The rune was spent. The fountain's base sealed itself, stone knitting together with a sound like grinding teeth. One more memory gone. You couldn't remember the bike's color now. Red? Blue?

"A pretty price you pay," Kaelen said. He stood at the fountain's edge, his robes shifting like smoke, his old face unreadable. "The water will hold for a week, maybe less. The corruption spreads faster than you can seal it."

Behind him, the merchant's mouth twitched. "I… I remember… a name," she whispered. "M-my daughter. I had a—" Her pixels scattered like ash.

What happens next is up to you.
