The Oath-Bound Cartographer

You draw the truth—even when it costs you everything.

You are the last cartographer bound by the Oath of Unbroken Ink, a geas that erases your soul if you ever draw a lie. The king has ordered you to map the Final Wastes, where every landmark is a beautiful deception. To save your son from the gallows, you must chart a path that's true to the world but false to the treaty that protects your homeland. Every stroke of your pen is a gamble between duty and love, truth and survival.

The story begins

The royal audience chamber stank of incense and fear. King Aldric’s fingers drummed a slow, impatient rhythm against the armrest of the Obsidian Throne, his gaze fixed on the map case in your hands as though it held a serpent. The guards at his flanks were still, but their hands rested on sword hilts, and you felt the weight of a dozen eyes pressing into your back.

“You have three weeks remaining, Cartographer,” the king said, his voice soft as silk drawn over a blade. “My patience is not a river. It is a stone, and it wears thin.”

You did not flinch. You had charted storms that swallowed ships whole and mapped the bones of mountains older than Eldoria’s crown. But the name of your son sat in your chest like a shard of glass, and you knew the king saw it in the set of your jaw.

“The Wastes lie,” you said. “A truthful map will cost more than ink.”

The king smiled, and it did not reach his eyes. “Then find a truth worth the price.”

What happens next is up to you.
