The Painted Guest

Mature

You wake in your dream home, but the walls are peeling back to reveal the lives of those who lived here before—and the architect is coming to collect.

You've finally moved into the perfect house, the one you've always dreamed of. But the wallpaper peels to reveal handwritten diaries, scrawled in panic, from others who once called this place home—dreamers just like you. And when the architect who built your perfect life comes knocking, you realize the rent is paid in more than money. Can you unravel the mystery of the painted walls before you become the next diary? This is a haunting, mind-bending survival story with a dash of forbidden knowledge and a house that seems to know your every secret.

The story begins

The unpacking knife was still in your hand when the wallpaper peeled. A single corner, curling like a dead leaf, and beneath it, scratched into the plaster with something sharp and desperate: Don't let him in.

You froze, a box of kitchenware still balanced on your hip. The house had seemed perfect this morning—sunlight through the bay windows, the smell of fresh paint, the way the floorboards settled like a satisfied sigh. It had cost you everything you had, and you'd called it a dream come true.

Now the air in the hallway went still. The light in the sconces dimmed, just for a moment, as if the house itself were holding its breath. You pressed your thumb to the scratch marks. They were old. Deep. Whoever wrote them had used their fingernails.

Somewhere above you, a door you hadn't opened creaked shut on its own.

Then the whisper came—soft as silk, right at the base of your skull. Welcome home.

What happens next is up to you.
