The Puppeteer's Thread

Mature

You wake with a key to a vault that holds the truth of your manufactured life.

You are a clerk in a city that feels like a stage, and one morning you find a key in your hand and a note that says your life is a lie. As you chase the truth through a labyrinth of false memories and hidden vaults, you discover your family, your fears, and even your past were crafted by a shadowy architect. Now that architect is hunting you with a device that can reset your mind at a touch. Can you unravel the threads of your fabricated existence before you lose yourself forever?

The story begins

The cold of the key woke you. Metal against your palm, foreign and sharp, a weight your hand had never known. The clocktower beyond the window read 3:07—it always read 3:07—and the city hummed its staged dawn, all glass and false gold.

The note lay crumpled on the pillow. Your life was built on a lie. The ink was fresh. The handwriting was yours.

You dressed without thinking, fingers memorizing the key's teeth. The apartment looked wrong now: the photograph on the shelf showed a face you didn't recognize, the books on the table had spines you'd never cracked. Every object was a prop you'd been paid to believe in.

A knock at the door. Three sharp raps, the rhythm of a handler's call.

You pressed your back to the wall, key clutched to your chest. The knock came again, harder.

"Open up," a voice said—low, familiar, wrong. "We know what you found."

What happens next is up to you.
