The Rival's Pact

Mature

Your family's ruin is your rival's doing, but to escape the Boon House, you'll have to trust them.

You've spent years hating the rival who destroyed your family's name, but when the cursed Boon House appears on your doorstep, it only opens for those bound by a shared curse. Now you and your bitterest enemy must navigate its shifting, haunted halls, where the dead demand a price and every shadow hides a secret. Your rival knows the cost of survival better than you, but can you trust them when their hands are stained with your family's blood? A tale of survival, revenge, and an impossible alliance in a house that thrives on hatred.

The story begins

The candelabra guttered when the door behind you slammed shut, and the air in the Boon House went cold as a grave. You didn't flinch—you'd learned long ago that showing fear to this place was like bleeding in shark-infused water. Your palm pressed flat against the wall, feeling the faint pulse beneath the damask, a heartbeat that wasn't yours.

"So." The voice came from the shadows to your left, silk over steel. The Rival stepped into the candlelight, their coat dusted with frost, their smile a blade's edge. "The last of the Ashford name, come to beg the house for scraps."

You turned slowly, letting the insult settle in your chest like a stone. "I'd rather die than beg, and I'd rather burn than share a room with you."

The house groaned in response, and the floor tilted. Somewhere above, something laughed—high and thin, a child's sound that made your teeth ache.

The Rival's smile faltered, just for a breath. "Then we're both in luck. The Keeper's waiting. And he only opens the door for two."

What happens next is up to you.
