The Ruin's Debt

Mature

You and your sworn enemy must break into a haunted mansion that only opens for those bound by mutual hatred.

You and Rourke, the rival who destroyed your old life, are bound by a curse that gives you both one chance to reclaim what was stolen. The Haunted Mansion of Ashfall only opens for those who share a deep, mutual hatred—and its halls are filled with traps that feed on that hatred. To reach the treasure that could restore your fortunes, you'll have to work together, but every step closer to the prize costs you a piece of the grudge you can't afford to lose. In this tale of survival and forced cooperation, the real enemy might be the anger that keeps you alive.

The story begins

The letter hung from your fingers, the wax seal already cracked—a serpent devouring its own tail, the mark of your family's ruin. Rourke's handwriting, unmistakable even after five years. The mansion appears at midnight. You know what's inside. Come if you still want to burn me. The paper trembled, not from fear, but from the old, familiar fire that had kept you alive through every cold night of exile.

You found the gates of Ashfall Manor standing open, though you'd have sworn they were locked when you arrived. The iron was warm to the touch, humming with a low, hungry vibration that settled in your teeth. And there, barely visible in the dark of the foyer, a figure. Tall. Still. Your name on his lips like an accusation.

"Still breathing, I see," Rourke said. His voice had deepened, but it carried that old, mocking edge you remembered. You stepped over the threshold, and behind you, the massive doors slammed shut with a sound like a coffin closing. The candles in the chandelier above guttered to life, illuminating the peeling wallpaper, the dust on the marble floor—and the slow, reluctant flicker of something like regret in Rourke's eyes.

"You look well," he said. "For a traitor."

What happens next is up to you.
