The True Name of Ash

Mature

Speak the names of the dead, and pay with your own years—but the final name is yours.

You are the last light-bearer, the only one who can speak the true names of the dead and bind them to rest. When the flooded crypt beneath Blackwood Manor breaks open, the dead rise, and you are the only one who can stop them. Each true name you utter costs a year of your life, and the final name is your own. Enter the haunted-house and face the impossible choice: save the living or save yourself.

The story begins

The great hall reeked of salt and rot, the air thick enough to taste. You stood at the threshold, lantern light bleeding across waterlogged flagstones, and the Drowned Priest regarded you from the head of his congregation—a hundred shapes in the gloom, their clothes clinging, their faces pale as drowned moths.

"Light-bearer," he said, and his voice came from everywhere and nowhere, layered like the sea. "You carry your grandmother's gift in your blood. She spoke forty names before the water took her. You will not speak so many."

Your lantern hissed. One of the drowned shifted, its head tilting at an angle no living neck could manage, and you caught the glint of a wedding ring on its rotted finger. A name surfaced in your mind, unbidden: Edith Marrow, died 1911, third wife of the clockmaker.

The cost of speaking it settled over you like a wet shroud—a year, gone before you'd even decided.

The priest smiled with teeth that had grown moss. "The crypt is flooding. Dawn will come, and the tide will rise, and the living will learn what it means to wait."

The Pale Girl materialized at your elbow, cold as a draft. Her lips brushed your ear.

"He's lying about one thing," she whispered. "He doesn't want you to fail. He wants you to choose."

What happens next is up to you.
