The Living Map

Mature

You chart the Spine of the World, but the mountains are charting you back.

As the empire's finest surveyor, you've been hired to map the uncharted Spine of the World for a ruthless mining syndicate. But these mountains are alive—they shift, they remember, and they punish those who betray them. Your expedition leader hides a map that could doom everyone, and now you must decide: sabotage the mission and escape, or follow orders and let the mountains claim you all. A story of survival, betrayal, and impossible choices in a living landscape.

The story begins

The canvas of your tent shivered, not from wind—the air was deathly still—but from the mountain itself. You’d felt it all day: a low, grinding tremor beneath your boots, like the range was shifting its bones. Your pencil hovered over the survey sheet, the ink lines you’d drawn at dawn already wrong. The ridge you’d mapped was gone, replaced by a jagged spine of black rock that hadn’t been there an hour ago.

Voices cut through the canvas, low and sharp. Vesper, his usual charm frayed to a raw edge: “You’ll doom us all, Grimm. That map isn’t a path—it’s a death warrant.”

A cold laugh. “The empire wants its ore. The syndicate wants its profit. You want to turn back because you saw a shadow in a cave. I’ll have the survey, or I’ll have your head.”

You pressed your palm flat against the ground. It thrummed beneath your skin, a heartbeat that wasn’t yours. You were the empire’s finest surveyor—you could read any landscape. But this one was reading you back.

What happens next is up to you.
